Hybrid Inverter Connection Guide for the Huawei SUN2000 with Communication Gateway Huawei SmartAssistant (SA4H-A02)

Written by Timo Streckfuß

Before you start

Before you begin, make sure:

  • The inverter is physically installed and powered on

  • You have the Huawei SmartAssistant (SA4H-A02) communication module

  • All assets (inverter, SmartAssistant) are updated to the latest software version

  • The FusionSolar app is installed on your device

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Connect the inverter to the network

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable to the SmartAssistant (SA4H-A02)

  2. Ensure the SmartAssistant is connected to the same local network as the gateway

  3. Verify the connection is established by checking the LED indicators on the SmartAssistant

For network infrastructure requirements and troubleshooting, see Infrastructure requirements for the gateway.

2. Access the inverter settings

  1. Open the FusionSolar app

  2. Log in with your Huawei installer account

  3. Follow the instructions to complete the inverter setup and communication module in the App

3. Enable communication via Modbus

  1. Navigate to:
    SmartAssistant SettingsConfiguration

  2. Configure the following Third-party EMS Connection Configuration settings:

    • EMS Connection Object: GridX

  3. Save the settings

3. Discover the inverter in the commissioning wizard

The inverter is now ready for the commissioning wizard. The gateway will scan the network to find available devices, which may take a few minutes. Once complete, the Huawei SUN2000 inverter will appear on the results page.

When the inverter is detected, in most cases set the asset type to Hybrid (PV and Battery) from the dropdown.

If you are using the inverter exclusively as a PV inverter, select PV System. If it is used solely as a battery inverter, choose Battery.

Country-specific configurations

Germany

Applies to PV installations exceeding 2 kWp installed after February 24, 2025.

For detailed information refer to §9 EEG (2025) – 60% feed-in limitation

No additional inverter configuration is required. The gateway controls the inverter directly (GCP Limit), supporting energy management optimization.

Energy management settings are configured automatically based on the inverter model. No manual changes are needed in the commissioning wizard.

FAQ

Why isn't the inverter appearing in the commissioning wizard?

Check that the SmartAssistant (SA4H-A02) is connected via Ethernet to the same network as the gateway. Verify that Modbus TCP is enabled by confirming GridX is selected as the EMS Connection Object in the FusionSolar app. Restart the gateway and wait for the network scan to complete.

How do I update the firmware of the inverter?

You can perform the update through the FusionSolar app.
For detailed update instructions, refer to the official Huawei documentation.

What is the SmartAssistant (SA4H-A02)?

The SmartAssistant (SA4H-A02) is Huawei's communication module required to connect the SUN2000 inverter to the local network. It enables Modbus TCP communication between the inverter and the gridX gateway. The previous model was called EMMA-A02.

Is the EMMA-A02 the same as the SmartAssistant (SA4H-A02)?

The EMMA-A02 is the previous generation of the SmartAssistant (SA4H-A02). It serves the same function and works the same way with the gridX gateway.

Why must GridX be selected as the EMS Connection Object?

Selecting GridX in the FusionSolar app activates Modbus TCP communication on the inverter simultaneously. Once set, the Modbus TCP configuration must not be modified to ensure reliable communication with the gridX gateway.
