Overview
This article explains the current limitations of dynamic tariff optimization with the Huawei SUN2000 MAP0/M1 inverter connected via the communication gateway SmartAssistant (SA4H-A02) or EMMA-A02.
The Huawei SUN2000 MAP0/M1 supports control by dynamic tariffs. Two dynamic tariff use cases currently have restricted control options (as of September 2026):
Discharging the battery into the grid (DTG)
Charging the battery from the grid (CFG)
Monitoring and self-consumption optimization are not affected and have no limitations.
Huawei and gridX plan to release a new firmware version that removes these limitations in Q1 2027 or earlier.
Limitations
Why is PV production curtailed during DTG and CFG with the Huawei SUN2000 MAP0/M1?
During DTG and CFG, gridX actively controls the Huawei battery. At the same time, the inverter's built-in grid connection point (GCP) control makes sure the GCP feed-in limit is not exceeded.
Keeping a GCP feed-in limit is mandatory under the German regulation §9 EEG. The Huawei SUN2000 MAP0/M1 stays compliant with §9 EEG and follows the battery setpoints. However, in the scenarios below, PV production may be curtailed more than necessary.
How does the limitation affect "Discharging the battery into the grid" (DTG)?
DTG decisions are mainly created to:
Use a higher feed-in compensation, if a time-variable feed-in compensation is present
Use arbitrage for negative feed-in compensation
Limitation: During DTG decisions, the Huawei SUN2000 MAP0/M1 curtails PV production to 0 kW.
Impact: Low. High feed-in compensations in the morning and evening are unlikely to coincide with significant PV production during winter (Q4 2026, Q1 2027).
How does the limitation affect "Charging the battery from the grid" (CFG)?
Limitation: During CFG decisions, the Huawei SUN2000 MAP0/M1 curtails any PV production that is higher than the battery charging power.
Impact: The limitation is expected to occur in the following scenarios:
Multi-asset setups: The power consumption of an EV or a heat pump was overestimated in the dynamic tariff prediction.
Forecast errors: Load and PV forecast errors lead to a CFG decision, although enough PV power would be available to charge the battery at or above the desired charging power.
FAQ
Why do the Huawei SUN2000 MAP0/M1 limitations only affect DTG and CFG?
In general, gridX relies on the inverter's built-in self-consumption optimization logic. gridX only intervenes with indirect control commands, for example to limit battery charging or discharging.
DTG and CFG are use cases where the indirect approach cannot be used. In these use cases, gridX must control the battery actively, which causes the PV curtailment described above.
Are monitoring and self-consumption optimization affected?
No. Monitoring and self-consumption optimization work without limitations on the Huawei SUN2000 MAP0/M1.
Where do I find the commissioning instructions for the Huawei SUN2000?
See Huawei - SUN2000 for step-by-step commissioning instructions.
