§14a EnWG Compliance

This article explains what §14a EnWG compliance is, how the gridX EMS implements it for EV charging, and how to configure it in the XENON Dashboard.

What is §14a EnWG compliance?

The EnWG §14a regulation in Germany requires private charging locations to offer power flexibility to the Distribution System Operator (DSO) for grid stabilization measures. In return, the DSO provides reduced grid fees.

When a §14a signal is active, the EMS curtails all EV charging stations (EVCS) at the site to keep their combined consumption within the DSO-defined limit.

How does the §14a algorithm work?

The §14a curtailment runs after regular load management has already distributed power:

  1. Load management distributes available power across all EVCS as normal

  2. If a §14a limit is present and the combined consumption of all §14a-relevant assets exceeds it, the EMS curtails all EVCS further to meet the limit

  3. Only EVCS consumption is considered when evaluating the §14a limit — other site loads are not included

What are the hardware requirements for §14a EnWG compliance?

A control unit (Steuerbox) must be installed at the site to receive and transfer DSO signals to the EMS.
